Summer 2020 Connecting Kids to Meals

SUMMER MEAL PROGRAM

Connecting Kids To Meals Will Continue To Feed Kids This Summer

COVID-19 continues to impact our community. At the outset when schools closed, Connecting Kids to Meals (CKM) set up 16 meal sites where kids could access healthy, free meals. Since mid-March, just over 190,000 grab-and-go meals have been served along with 67,000 weekend meal packets. As school districts cease meal service, CKM will increase the number of meal sites to 36 locations around Greater Toledo at libraries, school buildings and community centers. "We are currently serving about 3,600 meals each day Monday through Friday, so I expect that number to dramatically increase once we add 20 more sites. As we continue to experience the ramifications of this COVID-19 pandemic, access to healthy foods for kids is critically important," said Wendi Huntley, President of CKM. She further noted that collaboration is key to reaching kids and their families.

Lucas Metropolitan Housing (LMH) is one of the long-time partners this summer with multiple meal locations in their neighborhoods. "Today's children will be the leaders of tomorrow. Our purpose is to maintain direct contact with our youth to teach them the value of sharing. This is essential for their development as individuals who will give back to society. Our partnership with CKM is extremely important in our strategy of supplementing access to a decent and safe home with additional services that meet basic needs and the right to healthy food," said Joaquin Cintron Vega, President and Chief Executive Officer of LMH.

Partnership is so valued that staff at the Boys & Girls Clubs will be serving weekday meals at their sites despite the fact that the buildings are closed. Shawna Woody, Director of Operations, explained, "To be an access point where our members can receive meals on a daily basis is crucial. Having our staff serve the meals, just as they do when our Club doors are open, can hopefully bring a bit of familiarity to all of us during these uncertain times. We are thankful to CKM for allowing our staff to serve meals on the outside of the Clubs while we are busy inside preparing to open safely when that time comes."

In addition to providing weekday meals, weekend meal packets full of healthy shelf-stable breakfast and snack items will be given out on Fridays. To support this, CKM has launched its Children First Relief Fund, a campaign designed to raise the needed dollars to pay for the packets. Mercy Health, FCA, Designetics, Kroger Foundation and many other corporate and individual funders are pushing the
agency closer to its goal of $125,000 so that weekend meals can be provided through the summer. There is still time to donate. Visit www.ConnectingKidsToMeals.org. Every dollar raised will be used for food and zip lock bags. United Way, Mobile Meals and Lott Industries are helping to package the meals with staff and volunteer support. A site list is available on the agency's website and by calling 2-1-1.

About Connecting Kids to Meals
